Reconstruction of the SBR system with the implementation of an online process monitoring system.
SBR specifications: 50 × 50 m footprint, 6 m³ volume; 2 reactors.
Phase 2 of the online monitoring system for the industrial wastewater treatment process has been successfully implemented. The treatment capacity of the second phase is up to 4,500 m³/day.
The existing wastewater treatment facilities have been in operation for more than 10 years. Hydraulic loading and COD loading have increased by 30% compared to the original design parameters, which were based on a hydraulic capacity of 5,200 m³/day. The DAF system continued to perform satisfactorily; however, the SBR system was operating at the limits of its design capacity. To ensure compliance with the design parameters under increasing process loads, the following concept was implemented:
- A new stainless steel (SS) air distribution system equipped with fine-bubble diffusers.
- To support the nitrification/denitrification process, the range of online monitoring parameters was expanded to include five key indicators: dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), NH₄⁺, and NO₃⁻.
BEFORE RECONSTRUCTION
- Hydraulic load: 6,500–7,000 m³/day
- COD load: 11,500–12,800 kg/day
- Influent COD: 1,600–2,500 mg/L
- Energy consumption: 0.9–1.2 kWh/kg COD
- Online monitoring parameters: dissolved oxygen (DO)
RECONSTRUCTION
- Modernization of the aeration system: stainless steel air distribution system equipped with fine-bubble diffusers.
- Upgrade of the online monitoring system.
- New mounting and maintenance equipment for sensors, including the design and installation of 4-meter sensor support structures.
AFTER RECONSTRUCTION
- Hydraulic load: 7,800–8,400 m³/day
- COD load: 13,800–15,360 kg/day
- Influent COD: 1,600–2,500 mg/L
- Energy consumption: 0.6–0.75 kWh/kg COD
- Online monitoring parameters: dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), NH₄⁺, NO₃⁻.

Information acquisition and processing cabinet based on the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 controller; workstation with a database archive and Siemens SIMATIC WinCC software.
CHEMITEC analyzer and ISE probes.
